Currently, two thirds of US adults are either overweight or obese, according to results from the 1999-2000 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). This figure represents a 14% increase from 1994 and a 36% increase from 1980. Many studies have shown an increase in mortality rates associated with being overweight or obese. Individuals who are obese have up to a 50% increased risk of death compared with healthy weight individuals. Most of the increased risk is due to heart attack, stroke, and diabetes, all worsened by obesity. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) state that “next to smoking, obesity is the second leading cause of preventable death in the US today.” Strong evidence confirms that even a modest 10% decrease in body weight results in a reduction of blood pressure, fasting glucose, and lipid levels.
