Are You Trying Too Hard to Lose Weight?

By Amanda Leigh

Many people begin their healthy eating journey with the attitude that 'failure is not an option'. They feel committed to losing the weight and dream of how wonderful life will be when they reach their goal. And then, at some point, it all goes horribly wrong. It may surprise you to learn one of the main reasons people fail to lose weight successfully is because they're actually trying too hard.

Make Sure You Eat Enough

It's a common misconception that in order to lose weight, you have to practically starve yourself. If you only eat foods like lettuce and rice cakes, you will find that your energy levels suffer, and at some point your willpower goes absent without leave. To rectify this situation, your body will crave sugary, high-calorie snacks, and you will end up eating way more than you had originally intended. Instead, make sure you eat regular, balanced, filling meals. If you do find yourself getting hungry between meals, give in and eat a healthy snack. It's far better to do this than let yourself get ravenous, and eat the wrong type of foods later on.

Don't Deprive Yourself of Your Favorite Foods

Giving up all your favorite foods will lead to you feeling bored and quitting your diet. If you've always loved steak, burgers, or pizza, there's no need to stop having them. Just find a healthy way to cook them, or buy the healthy ready-made version. Don't forget to plan in occasional treats too. They will stop you feeling deprived in the long-run.

Set Realistic Goals

If you set your goals too high, and then fail to reach them, you will only end up feeling de-motivated. For example, a person sets a weight loss goal of 12lb over 4 weeks, but then they only lose 8lb over that 4 week period. Even though they have a good result, they may feel like giving up because they didn't hit their target. Instead, set small, realistic goals. When you achieve them, it will help to sustain your motivation. And if you lose more than you originally intended, you will feel on top of the world.

To lose weight you need to eat less but you don't have to starve yourself, and although you should limit high-calorie food, you can still treat yourself. For long term success you need to find the happy balance between doing too much and not doing enough. It is possible.
